  Sagar Project:

  Introduction

TSRD initiated Sagar Project in the year 1995. The Sagar Island is situated in the south-eastern corner of the Sundarbans touching the Bay of Bengal. Relatively, the incidence of cyclones and floods are of lesser intensity in Sagar than other parts of the Sundarbans, yet the usual problems of the island are eroding embankment, saline water inundation, eco-degradation and the poverty situation of the people. The erosion of embankment has reached at such a situation that three villages viz. Bishalakshipur, Lohachara and Khasimara have already been deepened down into the sea and around 16 villages are partly submerged. Yet, the Sagar Island has its own importance. It is famous to the Hindus as this is an ancient pilgrimage spot namely ‘Ganga Sagar’, a confluence of the river Ganges and Bay of Bengal where around one million pilgrims from different corners of the country come for the holly dip in the middle of January every year. But this very short term economic detonation seldom reaches to the people of the island. Now-a-days it is found that tourist/pilgrims are coming here round the year especially on or around the holidays though fewer in numbers. TSRD runs this project namely ‘Sagar Project’ in this island and also covers some more islands and blocks under its fold.
