Hingalgunj Project: |
|
|
|
Introduction
Hingalgunj is located in the southern most end of North 24-Parganas district
bounded by river Goureswar and Raymongal in the north and west, Ichamati and
Kalindi in the east and south, sharply divided by an off soot of river
Ichamati formed tri-junction, distributed the island in three parts. This
confluence forms the largest river Raymangal. In the southern most point the
Forest Jhingakhali Reserve stretched about 150 sq. kms. All the way through
eastern flank the river Ichamati and Kalindi forms the international border
with Bangladesh. The block consists with 44 Revenue villages of 9 Gram
Panchayats namely, Hingalgunj, Rupamari, Bispur, Sandelerbil, Dulduli,
Sahibkhali, Jogeshgunj, Gobindakati and Kalitala.
The Hingalgunj Community Development Block has an area of 230.40 sq. km. The
Population as per 2001 census is 1,56,568, the density of population per km.
is 680.
Critical issues of Hingalgunj encompass by Climate Change effect :
The most critical issue of the area is vulnerable embankments and
breach/collapse due to gradual higher up tidal effect is a regular
phenomenon and is the prime consequential effect of Global warming. This is
a scientific truth as detected by the Department of Oceanography, Jadavpur
University. Tagore Society was an integral part of the research.
The second issue is salinity of soil. This is an intrinsic phenomenon of its
soil texture and proved to be immovable. Sweet underground water (at a depth
of 600' to 1200') and scarcity vice versa the unfavourable soil texture is
unable to recharge fresh water - the soil is sticky. Rain water reserve is
only alternative, but erratic rain leads to fail the initiative. Drinking
water tube wells fails frequently and not environmentally sustainable, but
the inaction of Panchayats is prominent to feed this basic minimum need of
life.
The complex of the situation is compounded by about 40% migration of youth
from the area for search of livelihood and gradual settlement in nearby
suburb out of income from outside. The capable man power is in scarcity. |
